Damselfish are part of the family Pomacentridae, which contains a large number of species from various genera, many of which are commonly found in the aquarium trade. Most species are associated closely with reefs, although some are found in temperate climates. Many species display a beautiful array of colors, with interesting patterns. Although some species are known for their aggressive behaviors, the majority of the species commonly kept in aquariums are smaller (ranging in size from 2-3") and generally well-behaved in a mixed reef system, provided sufficient space and food are provided, and that environmental condoitions are to their liking. Some species have been bred in captivity; however, the majority are collected from reef areas throughout the world. At Unique, we are careful to select Damsels that are: a) by and large peaceful in the aquarium, b) hardy and easy to acclimate to captive life, and c) attain relatively small sizes.
