Salarias fasciatus - Lawnmower Blenny - One of the most beloved of the blennies, the Lawnmower Blenny is an active, peaceful, comical fish, which will perch on rocks and dart in and out of rockwork in the aquarium. This species is a durable fish, and adapts well to captivity. It may not take kindly to other blennies in “it’s” aquarium, so do use consideration when selecting tankmates.

The Lawnmower Blenny does well in an established aquarium with significant algae growth to forage on, and will also consume other foods, such as mysis, etc.  Although not common, this fish has occasionally been known to nip at small polyped stony corals and clam mantles as it searches for algal growth. The Lawnmower Blenny should be kept individually in an established aquarium with significant algae growth to forage on.

Details

Blennies are mostly small, relatively inactive fishes that typically have continuous long dorsal and anal fins, Most display relatively stump-like pelvic fins, which they use to support themselves when perched on various substrates. This huge and diverse group of fishes contains at least 125 genera and more than 700 species, with new ones being described all the time.

Most are quite peaceful, spending much of their time hopping about the rocks and substrate in the aquarium, searching for food items. Some, such as the Meiacanthus species, swim actively in the water column, and are known collectively as “Fang Blennies” because they sport enlarged canine teeth with associated venom glands. However, these Blennies make good aquarium subjects, because the “fangs” are typically used for defensive purposes only. By and large, this is a hardy group of fishes, which categorically do well in aquariums If collected carefully, handled conscientiously after capture, and kept well fed, most species are quite sturdy, and well suited for a long and happy life in the aquarium.

The vast majority of Blennies are perfect for reef aquariums, with just a few having a reputation for nipping occasionally at sessile invertebrates. Species such as Salarias fasciatus are much loved as algae groomers. Although they are out in the open in the aquarium for large parts of the day, these fishes do appreciate rockwork and caves to retreat to at times. They are good eaters, readily consuming prepared foods. Many species supplement their diet with algal material and microfauna, for which they forage constantly.. Blennies are great for adding color, utility, and personality to the aquarium, and may become quite endearing with their interesting, and frequently comical behaviors.
