The genus Montipora is a highly variable genus, with over 20 confirmed species. It is a relatively fast growing coral, and will spread rapidly if conditions are to its liking. Montipora have very small polyps, which gives them a very distinct appearance. There are a number of different growth forms, including encrusting and branching forms.
The encrusting forms are typically easy to maintain, requiring moderate lighting and moderate water movement. It may be kept in close proximity to other corals. The branching forms are very hardy, and grow into impressive colonies in a relatively short span of time.
