There are literally hundreds of species of shrimp in the world's oceans. However, there are only a few dozen that find their way into the aquarium trade. Shrimp fulfill an aesthetic and utilitarian role in the aquarium. Some are useful as "cleaners", removing parasites from fishes, while others scavenge uneaten food. Some of the more useful species, such as the Peppermint Shrimp, Lysmata wurdmanni, consume pesky Aiptasia anemones. Some have symbiotic relationships with other animals, such as anemones or even fishes. Shrimp are attractive, interesting, and practical additions to the home aquarium.
