Unique Corals is proud to offer the return of one of the most legendary reef-building materials ever available to hobbyists: Walt Smith Fiji Pukani Rock.
This is 100% natural, sustainably collected Pukani rock, formed over many years from genuine coral skeletons in the ocean. Its incredible porosity, intricate shapes, and unmatched biological potential have made it one of the most sought-after aquascaping materials in the marine aquarium hobby.
Unlike man-made alternatives, authentic Pukani is the product of natural reef-building processes that occurred over decades, creating a structure that is both lightweight and extraordinarily porous. The result is a rock that not only looks like a natural reef—it actually was part of one.
Collected under strict sustainability guidelines and fully permitted export programs, this rock offers hobbyists access to a truly unique and finite natural resource while supporting responsible collection practices.
Why Pukani Is So Highly Regarded
Pukani’s highly porous structure provides enormous surface area for beneficial nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, making it one of the most effective biological filtration media available. Its natural tunnels, ledges, arches, and cavities create dramatic aquascapes while providing shelter and swimming pathways for fish and invertebrates.
Because it is significantly lighter than most reef rock by volume, aquarists can create larger, more open aquascapes using less overall weight.
Key Features
- Genuine Fiji Pukani rock from Walt Smith
- Formed naturally from ancient coral skeleton structures
- Sustainably collected and responsibly sourced
- Extremely porous for exceptional biological filtration
- Lightweight and easy to aquascape
- Unique shapes, arches, caves, and natural reef textures
- Provides natural shelter and habitat for marine life
- Ideal for reef aquariums, fish-only systems, and custom aquascapes
- Finite and highly sought-after collector-grade reef rock
Sold By Weight
Pukani is sold by the pound with a 5-pound minimum purchase.
As a reference, a piece approximately the size of a bowling ball typically weighs only 3–4 pounds due to its remarkable porosity.
Each piece is unique. Photos shown represent random pieces selected from a single box of Pukani rock. Shapes, sizes, and appearances will vary naturally.
For extra-large show pieces, please contact us directly.
As Your Reef Matures
Over time, Pukani becomes colonized by beneficial bacteria, microfauna, sponges, coralline algae, and other reef organisms. As it matures, it transforms into a vibrant living reef structure that closely resembles natural live rock found in established reef aquariums.
Important Note
Because Pukani originates from a natural ocean environment, trace amounts of bound nutrients may be present within its porous structure. During the first few months of use, small amounts of phosphate may be released into the aquarium water.
This is normal and easily managed through common reefkeeping practices, including the use of phosphate-removal media such as GFO or lanthanum chloride-based phosphate control methods.
Each piece of Pukani tells a natural story decades in the making. Created from the calcium carbonate skeletons of corals and countless reef-dwelling organisms, these formations naturally completed their life cycle and were gradually sculpted by ocean currents, wave action, storms, and weathering into the remarkable shapes found today. This process creates the exceptional porosity, caves, ledges, and organic textures that have made authentic Pukani legendary among reef aquarists.
