Corals 101

Corals 101

Whether you’re new to reef-keeping, considering starting your own reef tank, or just finished cycling your tank, you'll end up wondering, “What corals should I get? It is easy to get a bit too excited stocking your first tank with beautiful and exotic corals. The issue is that some of these corals need specific conditions, which can be incredibly difficult and or impossible to achieve when starting out. Although it is very possible for beginners to achieve great success with more difficult corals, the likely hood of them surviving goes down drastically. Unfortunately getting in over your head at the start can lead to losses in money, motivation, and can ultimately cause people to leave the hobby before they really even start. The corals listed below are some of our favorites when it comes to hardy corals that are also easy on the eyes, making them ideal corals for beginners.

Zoanthids, Palythoa, and Protopalys are all extremely hardy coral. You’ll often find multiple polyps attached to a piece of reef rock, often coated with coralline algae. It’s a great way to add corals and seed your tank with purple and pink coralline algae.

Like mushroom coral, Zoanthid morphs are often sold with highly descriptive names like “Grandmaster Krakatoa” and “Cinnamon Apple”. These are often some of the most desirable and beautiful species, depending on ones opinion. Although, there are also plenty of zoanthids sold in the hobby with no name, that hold just as much beauty.

Zoanthids come in a full array of color combinations including orange, green, red, yellow and blue.

Give this coral medium to high light and they’ll spread across the rock, creating a carpet of vibrant color. Zoanthus enjoy medium water currents and will filter-feed on baby brine shrimp and micro pellets.

Many people have fallen in love with "nano reefs" which zoanthids are great for, there are countless beautiful pictures online of peoples Nuvo 10 gallon nano reefs, stocked to the brim with softies.

Mushrooms

Mushroom corals are a great choice for a beginner reef tank as they require low to moderate lighting. These soft corals are available in several colors such as metallic green, green-striped, blue-spotted, red and metallic blue. Keep in mind there are many varieties or “morphs” in the world of mushroom corals. These generic names are created to describe the look of the morph but aren’t governed by any scientific rules.

Actinodiscus mushroom corals should be placed low or mid-height inside the tank. If the water flow is too strong they won’t fully expand, so keep them in a calm area of the tank.  You can feed each polyp with microplankton coral food OR you can also add food to the water flow. And, over time mushroom corals will reproduce and spread out on the rock. Mushroom corals are also extremely easy to propagate, all you have to do is cut a specimen symmetrically in half, and boom, you have two mushrooms. Many fragging kits are bundled and sold to make fragging easier for you.

These mushrooms thrive in lower light and slow flow rates. They make great corals for nano tanks or at the bottom of larger reef aquariums.

Pulsing Xenia

Pulsating Xenia, also known as Waving Hand Coral, is also hardy. The branched stems sway gracefully while their tentacled polyps pulse in the water. The movement creates an almost alien landscape in a tank. I personally think it’s very relaxing just to gaze at them for a period of time. They really give your tank a certain quality of “liveness.” Although Xenia is known to be an extremely hardy species, it is still recommended that you solely use water produced by a Reverse Osmosis unit. These units help to remove contaminants commonly found in tap water that would otherwise harm a coral reef.

Xenia contain symbiotic algae but are capable of filter-feeding. They thrive under moderate lighting and medium water flow. Xenia will reproduce and spread throughout the tank. If you happen to own one, you already know they grow like weeds in a healthy aquarium. In fact, you probably have reefing friends that may offer you a branch or two.

Some aquarists surround their colonies with loose rubble pieces. When the colonies spread to the rubble piece, they’ll pull the piece away, and they trade them in at their local fish shop or reefing club. There are many ways to enjoy reefing, with the emphases on "enjoy"!  Happy reefing.

It’s the Perfect Time to Start a FishTank! - By Marine Depot

It’s the Perfect Time to Start a FishTank! - By Marine Depot

Now is the time to set up an aquarium

Aquarium keeping is a rewarding hobby that is both exciting and calming, educational and entertaining. With so many people quarantined at home, it’s no surprise that we’re all feeling a bit bored, anxious, and frustrated. Be assured the outbreak will eventually end and we’ll return to our normal routines. But what to do while waiting? People around the world are discovering new hobbies. Some are buying musical instruments like guitars and ukuleles. Others are going old-school with jigsaw puzzles. We really like the idea of starting an aquarium in your home. In fact, it has never been easier to set up a fish tank and dive into the fascinating world of aquarium-keeping. Starting an aquarium now will help you relax while also allowing you to learn and grow. If you have kids at home from school, think of it as an epic in home science class that is fun and rewarding.

Why set up an aquarium?

You may wonder what makes an aquarium special. Aquariums are windows into amazing worlds where humans rarely wander. An aquarium, much more than a “tank of fish,” is a miniature ecosystem teeming with vivid fish, plants, and invertebrates. Fish constantly move and exhibit unique personalities and habits. Some friendly fish will even eat right from your hand. Live plants provide more than scenery as they serenely sway in the current. You can even cultivate colorful corals right at home! The possibilities are endless.

Should I start with freshwater or saltwater?

The two things you should consider are your personal interests and your time investment. If you’ve always dreamed about keeping colorful marine fish and majestic corals, you may want to  jump right into the reef hobby. Reef tanks are especially appealing to “techy” people because many reef lighting and saltwater filtration systems are specialized, high-tech devices. Bu specialized does not have to mean difficult. Protein skimmerswave makers, and programmable LED lighting are really cool gear that use technology to simplify keeping exotic marine life in your own home. Freshwater aquariums use simpler filtration and lighting but are no less beautiful. You can recreate an Amazonian stream with a school of neon cardinal tetras. Or, add live aquatic plants and turn a freshwater planted tank into a tropical aquatic garden for your fish to explore. Some freshwater aquarists skip the fish and go with vibrant cherry shrimp. No matter what type of aquarium you choose, the variety of fish, plants, and invertebrates to choose from are almost endless.

What size aquarium?

Modern aquariums come in a wide range of sizes from small “nano” desktop tanks to large free-standing aquarium systems. Check out these sleek modern designs that fit into any room of your home. You may have seen tiny plastic aquariums sold at Big Box stores that look like an easy way to get into the hobby. But they are made with cheap, easily scratched plastic that distorts the appearance of the fish and plants. The aquarium filter will be underpowered. That’s why we recommend choosing an aquarium from a reliable manufacturer. All of the aquariums we offer are manufactured by companies dedicated to providing long-term dependability with high-quality workmanship.

Where do I purchase my fish?

Many pet shops are open during the quarantine period. But if your neighborhood doesn’t have a dedicated fish shop you can always order fish, plants, invertebrates, and aquarium decor online. Most livestock shipments are delivered by overnight shipping. We strongly recommend giving your tank around two weeks to cycle before adding aquatic life. This gives you time to make sure everything is working properly and ready before the shipment arrives.

How to get helpful advice

It’s a good idea to educate yourself about what’s involved with the various types of freshwater and marine aquariums before you start the project. There is a lot of information on the internet and it can become confusing sometimes. Marine Depot has an ever-expanding library of educational videos.

"10 Upgrades to Dalua’s DC Great White Protein Skimmer" - Reefbuilders

"10 Upgrades to Dalua’s DC Great White Protein Skimmer" - Reefbuilders

The Great White from Dalua Australia is one of the best value protein skimmers in the reef aquarium hobby and now Dalua is doing the same for controllable DC skimmers. The new Great White DC skimmer is much more than just a DC powered version of the original sporting ten improvements to the design for even better performance and ease of use.

Building on the success and widespread popularity of the original Great White skimmers, Dalua doubled the number of sizes in the range and developed four different models of the Great White DC. The larger GW10 was probably the most popular size in the original line and we’ll be comparing it to the similarly sized Great White DC12 to see all the ways that the new models have been improved.

1. DC Needle Wheel Pump

The inclusion of a DC Pump is clearly the most obvious new improvement to the Great White Skimmer offering improved performance, quieter operation, and reduced power draw. The larger needle wheel also draws in more air than the similarly sized AC pump so there’s even more foam to carry away all the unwanted nutrients.

2. Controller w/ Functions

Just because most DC powered pumps are controllable, it’s actually much cheaper to make a non-controllable, one-speed DC pump. You would still get the primary benefits of reduced power and silent operation, but you need some electronics to make them speed up or ramp down, or go into pause/feed mode for a period of time.

3. 3D Printed Venturi Valve

Besides the controllable needle wheel pump, perhaps one of the most interesting new improvements to the new Great White DC skimmers is the use of a 3D printed venturi valve. By printing their own aspirating mechanism for each pump and skimmer model, Dalua can do a lot more fine tuning to the performance of the skimmer getting the ratio of the air/water mixture just right.

4. Larger Thumb Screws

The thumb screws included in the base of the Great White DC skimmer are much larger and much easier to handle, especially for guys like us with big sausage fingers.

5. Bayonet Neck Fitting

The new Bayonet locking neck is very smooth and very easy to engage and disengage which will make removing and replacing the cup easier than ever, and possible to do with one hand on the GW12.

6. Reduced Clearance Required

The GW12 DC is about one inch shorter than the GW10 but due to the new bayonet neck fitting there’s even less clearance required to remove and replace the collection cup. The GW10 is 23 inches tall but requires an extra inch of clearance, 24 inches or 60cm in total while the GW12 is 22 inches tall, but only needs 22.5″ of clearance; this sounds like a small difference but it’s the best approach to pack a ton of power into a modern, compact all in one sump for smaller reef tank setups.

7. Wider Neck

The width of the neck on the GW12DC may only be half an inch wider in diameter than the GW10, but this translates to a 30% increase in the surface area. The wider neck works better in regular seawater salinity environments making it capable of producing thicker foam, but most of all it should be much more stable at skimming marine aquarium water.

8. Larger Reaction Volume

The wider neck is not limited to the collection cup as the conical portion of the body is also wider in cross section at the top. This wider path also creates a larger reaction volume for more reaction time, and a skimmer that is generally better at processing a foam of air & water.

9. Larger Drain Hole

Since the Dalua Great White DC 12 can produce more skimmate than ever before, the larger drain hole will make it simpler for users to use a protein skimmer waste collector remotely from the primary filtration area.

10. Integrated Air Silencer

The new integrated air silencer is a circular ring that forms the bayonet where the cup locks into the body of the skimmer. Unlike typical small air silencers the circular design is concentric and reduces the noise of the air intake which is more important than ever since the GW12 pulls in an estimated 50% more air than its predecessor.
